When the participants arrive at the Metropolis2013 Conference they will meet with the principles of sustainability right at the first registration desk. The organisers have ordered the participant bags that are made of recycled materials which the participants can take only if they need them to carry the conference materials.
The Metropolis2013 bags will be sown at the Multicultural training workshop in the Nekala parish hall in Tampere. The workshop is a place for those who come from outside the European Union through marriage or in search for work and who have lived in Finland for less than five years.
The workshop consists of studying the Finnish language and culture, learning media skills and job training. The instructors in the Finnish language and media skills come from the local colleges and the education is free for the participants.
In the parish hall, the workshop participants also get advice on job applications and filling out official forms. The multicultural training workshop is a co-operation project of the Ahjola Open College and the Tampere Employment Service Agency. The European Fund for the Integration of Third-country Nationals participates in the funding of the workshop.
In the workshop the immigrant women sow seasonal products such as Christmas calendars and ornaments, knit socks, booties and mittens and make multicultural dolls. The women who come from several different countries have become friends while sowing and having coffee together.
The Metropolis bags come in two different styles and they can be made of several different materials that are of different colours.
